Annie Stainer is an original.

Having studied dance at the London School of Contemporary Dance and Mime with Etienne Decroux in Paris, Annie established her reputation in Britain and Europe. She has performed with Lindsay Kemp, David Bowie and Steven Berkoff, but is best known for her work in solo physical theatre.

For 6 years she was Head of Movement in Theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

In 2002 she established Total Theatre, her highly acclaimed School of Physical Theatre training for young people. Her Total Theatre Company went on to create a uniquely accessible, vibrant and popular form of performance, fusing together theatre, dance, song and circus, and regularly playing to sold out audiences.

Having created the role of Ernestine in Lindsay Kemp’s internationally acclaimed ‘Flowers’, Annie went on to create three solo works : ‘The Legend of Lilith’, ‘Moon’ and ‘Changing Woman’. Each of these toured the world, and led to her featuring in the Australian tour of ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ with Steven Berkoff.

She began her multi award-winning solo physical theatre career with ‘The Legend of Lilith’, an epic work performed in theatres, churches and cathedrals, including the Cathedral of St John the Divine, Manhattan, the world’s biggest Cathedral.

‘Moon’, her most celebrated work, received a Fringe First Award in Edinburgh and has since been performed all over the world at Festivals in London, Belfast, Wroclaw, Berne, Palermo, Salzburg, Amsterdam, Budapest, Jerusalem, Tokyo and New York.

‘Changing Woman’ premiered in Glasgow, Scotland; and was later performed at the Festival of Perth, Australia as part of the Annie Stainer Trilogy.

‘Don Quixote’ with Emil Wolk premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

‘The Ancient Mariner’, also with Emil Wolk, premiered in Edinburgh and also won a Fringe First Award.

She has a long history of creating accessible children’s theatre with Reg Bolton, including ‘Trolls’, ‘ Daughter Daughter fetch the Water’, ‘The Suitcase Circus’ and ‘The Art of the Clown’.  With ‘Suitcase Circus’ she toured Great Britain, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Jerusalem, Switzerland, Palermo, Puerto Rico and the USA.
